SAN FRANCISCO – New video footage has emerged from last Friday’s “Recall Ed Lee” rally at San Francisco City Hall, in which some recall organizers were expressing anti-Chinese sentiments. In the video, one recall proponent is shown screaming, “Go back to China!” repeatedly, and using profane ethnic slurs.

"It is shocking and deeply offensive to hear such openly hateful language used against Chinese Americans - and on the steps of San Francisco City Hall, of all places," said Assemblyman David Chiu. "I urge every San Franciscan to join me in opposing this divisive recall effort."

The “Recall Ed Lee” proponent caught on camera was one of about 20 activists gathered at City Hall on Friday to announce they were forming a campaign to recall the mayor. The group, calling itself Recall Mayor Ed Lee 2016, announced it had filed a petition with the Department of Elections and would begin collecting signatures to prompt a special taxpayer-funded election to recall the mayor.

The recall would cost taxpayers at least $3.5 million.

The “Recall Ed Lee” group was met by roughly 200 San Franciscans who turned out in support of Mayor Lee, and to protest the recall effort. According to witnesses, several recall organizers confronted the group of largely Chinese American supporters of Mayor Lee, and some were spewing anti-Chinese racial epithets. The woman later caught on video went so far as to knock a Mayor Lee supporter’s hat off of her head.

“San Franciscans now finally see the hate that stands behind the proposed recall of Mayor Ed Lee: anti-Chinese sentiment that has no place in the City’s political debate. I call on every San Franciscan to oppose this wasteful recall and denounce these racist comments,” said Fiona Ma, chairwoman of the California Board of Equalization.

“Mayor Lee is a leader for all San Franciscans. He deserves our support and respect as he works to tackle homelessness, transportation and other key issues facing San Francisco,” Ma said. “The proposed recall is an expensive distraction from solving the City’s real problems.”

A recent poll conducted by EMC Research found that a large majority of San Francisco voters oppose the recall efforts. Citywide, 66 percent of likely voters would oppose a measure to recall Mayor Lee and fewer than 7 percent were undecided – meaning there’s little room for growth on the extremists’ side.

Mayor Ed Lee is San Francisco’s first Chinese American mayor, and Chinese Americans make up more than 20 percent of the City’s population. Earlier in his career, Ed Lee was a civil and housing rights lawyer for disenfranchised communities. Later, he served as executive director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission under Mayors Agnos, Jordan, and Brown, responsible for enforcing City ordinances and policies on nondiscrimination and economic progress for all San Franciscans.
